The Little Karoo – Die Klein Karoo (English and German Edition)

The Little Karoo is a visually striking photographic and cultural portrait of one of South Africa’s most distinctive landscapes. Published in 1998 by Human & Rousseau, this bilingual English and German edition combines evocative photography with insightful commentary to explore the natural beauty, history and atmosphere of the Klein Karoo region. Created by Jan van Tonder and photographer Lanz von Horsten, the book captures the rugged charm and quiet grandeur of this semi-arid area stretching between the Swartberg and Langeberg mountain ranges.

Through exceptional landscape photography and carefully written text, The Little Karoo introduces readers to the dramatic scenery, unique vegetation and rural traditions that define the region. The book explores historic towns, isolated farms, mountain passes and vast open spaces, presenting an intimate view of an area deeply connected to South African heritage and identity. Von Horsten’s photography is particularly notable for its rich light and expansive compositions, which convey both the harshness and beauty of the Karoo environment.

Beyond its visual appeal, The Little Karoo also serves as a cultural document of the people and traditions of the region. The text reflects on local architecture, farming communities and the historical influences that shaped the Klein Karoo over generations. Readers with an interest in South African travel, regional history and landscape photography will find the book especially rewarding. Its bilingual format further broadens its appeal to international readers and collectors of South African photographic works.

Beautifully produced and increasingly collectible, The Little Karoo remains an excellent addition to any Africana, travel or photography library. The combination of thoughtful writing and superb imagery creates a lasting tribute to one of South Africa’s most memorable and visually compelling regions.
