The Mammals of South Africa by Austin Roberts remains one of the landmark reference works on the mammals of southern Africa and is regarded as an essential title in African natural history literature. First published in 1951 after decades of research by the renowned zoologist Austin Roberts, this substantial volume documents the rich diversity of South Africa’s mammalian fauna through detailed species accounts, distribution information, behavioural observations and scientific descriptions. The work also features numerous illustrations and colour plates by Rev. P. J. Smit, making it both an important scientific publication and a highly regarded historical natural history reference.
Roberts’ pioneering contribution to African zoology continues to make The Mammals of South Africa desirable to researchers, conservationists, historians of science and collectors of Africana. Although later editions were published, the 1951 first edition retains particular historical significance as the original comprehensive treatment issued by the Trustees of The Mammals of South Africa Book Fund. It represents an important milestone in South African wildlife publishing and remains a frequently cited reference.
The Mammals of South Africa is offered solely as an affordable reference example for those wishing to own this classic work despite its cosmetic shortcomings. While no longer suitable as a collector’s copy, it remains a useful addition to the library of anyone interested in African mammals, zoology, wildlife conservation, game reserves, hunting history, ecology or South African natural history. The text block remains intact overall despite the wear, allowing the book to continue serving its intended purpose as a comprehensive reference on the mammals of southern Africa.
Condition – Poor
1951 hardcover. Green cloth boards and spine are heavily stained, with the gilt-stamped title and animal motifs now barely legible. There are what appear to be rodent gnaw marks to the front cover and along the fore-edge of the pages from approximately page 655 through to the rear endpaper. The binding is somewhat loose but remains generally intact. General staining, soiling and age-related wear are present throughout. This copy is sold strictly as a reference/reading copy and is not suitable for collectors seeking a presentable example.
