The New Colony of Port Natal – University of Natal facsimile reproduction of the scarce 1850 emigrant guide to Port Natal, complete with fold-out map and interesting Natal provenance.
1 in stock
An attractive facsimile reproduction of one of the most important early works relating to the settlement and development of Natal. Originally published in London in 1850, The New Colony of Port Natal: With Information for Emigrants was written by James Erasmus Methley, General Commission Agent for Pietermaritzburg and Durban, to promote the opportunities available in the young British colony of Natal.
The New Colony of Port Natal provided prospective emigrants with practical information regarding climate, agriculture, land availability, commerce, transport, and settlement prospects in what would become one of South Africa’s most significant regions. Today it remains an important primary source for historians, genealogists, collectors of Africana, and researchers studying colonial Natal and nineteenth-century emigration.
This copy is a facsimile reproduction produced by the Photoduplication Department of the University of Natal from the scarce 1850 Third Edition. Particularly desirable is the presence of the fold-out explanatory map, a feature often absent from surviving copies and reproductions. The New Colony of Port Natal also contains several intriguing ownership inscriptions relating to Natal as well as a tipped-in printed sheet dated 1849 and a handwritten gift inscription dated 1909, adding provenance and historical interest to the book.
An excellent reference work for collectors of Nataliana and Africana, providing a fascinating contemporary account of early colonial settlement in Port Natal and the interior of Natal during the mid-nineteenth century.
