The Old Cape House by Ralph Kilpin is an important early South African historical work dealing with the development and history of the Cape Legislative Assembly. Subtitled Being Pages from the History of a Legislative Assembly, this fascinating volume provides an account of parliamentary life and government at the Cape and offers valuable insight into the political institutions that preceded the formation and development of the Union of South Africa.
Ralph Kilpin was well placed to record this history, having served as Second Clerk-Assistant of the Union House of Assembly. His knowledge of parliamentary procedure and administration gives the book particular historical significance. The Old Cape House also features a foreword by the prominent South African statesman The Rt. Hon. J. X. Merriman, an important figure in Cape political history and the last Prime Minister of the Cape Colony.
Published in Cape Town by T. Maskew Miller in 1918, this is the first edition of The Old Cape House and is an appealing piece of early 20th-century Africana. The attractive illustrated title page and period binding add considerably to its character as an early South African publication.
This particular copy has additional institutional provenance, having formerly belonged to Durban Girls’ College, with surviving library stamps, labels, inscriptions and lending material.
