The Private Pilot’s Handbook by G. D. P. Worthington is a comprehensive South African aviation training manual covering the theoretical knowledge required to obtain a Private Pilot’s Licence. Published by W. J. Flesch & Partners, this fifth edition appeared in August 1968 and represents an interesting period in the development of private aviation and pilot training in South Africa.
Written specifically for South African student pilots, The Private Pilot’s Handbook presents technical aviation subjects in clear, accessible language. The author aimed to condense the essential knowledge required for the Private Pilot’s Licence examinations into a practical reference, avoiding unnecessarily complicated technical explanations.
The publication covers an extensive range of aviation subjects, including the principles of flight, meteorology, air navigation, aviation regulations, radio communication, airmanship, aircraft engines, flight instruments and instrument flying. Additional sections examine multi-engined aircraft operations, aviation insurance, fuel quality control, medical aids and good operating practices. Examination papers and practical navigation exercises further enhance its usefulness as a historical training reference.
The Private Pilot’s Handbook was compiled in consultation with the Division of Civil Aviation of the South African Department of Transport. Specially prepared diagrams by R. C. D. Saunders accompany the instructional material, helping readers understand important aeronautical principles.
