1 in stock
The Reason Why by Cecil Woodham-Smith is widely regarded as one of the finest narrative military histories of the twentieth century and remains an essential work on the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War. First published in 1953, this landmark study combines meticulous historical research with highly readable storytelling, reconstructing the personalities, politics, rivalries, and military incompetence that culminated in one of Britain’s most famous battlefield catastrophes.
Woodham-Smith examines the chain of command, aristocratic rivalries, and failures of communication that led hundreds of cavalrymen into near-certain destruction at the Battle of Balaclava in 1854. Her work transformed military historiography by moving beyond simple battlefield description and exploring the human and institutional failures behind the tragedy. The result is The Reason Why, a gripping and enduring account of Victorian warfare, empire, leadership, and sacrifice.
This 1953 Constable London first edition The Reason Why retains its original fold-out battle map at the rear, an important feature often missing from surviving copies. The period dust jacket artwork depicting the famous cavalry charge gives the volume exceptional shelf appeal and collector interest. Copies of early editions with jackets and complete maps remain highly sought after by collectors of military history, Crimean War material, and classic historical non-fiction.
An important and influential military history title that continues to be read by historians, collectors, and enthusiasts of nineteenth-century warfare.
