The Red Squad Story is Ross Meurant’s account of the Red Squad, the New Zealand Police unit that stood on the front line during the 1981 Springbok rugby tour of New Zealand. This copy is the South African issue, published in Cape Town by Don Nelson Publisher in September 1982, a month after the book first appeared in New Zealand under the Harlen Publishing Co imprint in Auckland.
The Red Squad Story is bound in dark cloth with the title and author lettered in red on the spine, and comes in its original pictorial dust jacket. The front panel shows a line of officers in riot helmets in stark black and white beneath stencilled orange lettering, while the rear panel repeats the title as a pattern of text. It was designed by Susan Wilson and Diana Curtis, typeset by City Typesetters in Parnell, Auckland, and printed by Colorcraft in Hong Kong.
The 1981 tour remains one of the most divided chapters in New Zealand’s sporting and political history, with protest over sporting contact with apartheid South Africa following the Springboks from match to match. The Red Squad Story tells that story from behind the police lines, a perspective seldom put on record, and makes a useful counterpart to the many accounts written from the protest side.
Condition – Very Good
A very good hardcover in its original dust jacket. There is small loss to the cloth along the bottom edge of the board, and the dust jacket shows light wear to the edges. The copy is slightly shelf worn overall. A block of ink marker obscures an earlier note on the verso of the front free endpaper.
