The Saga of the Great Trek, a scarce 40-page commemorative booklet by J. J. Bond was issued in December 1949 to mark the inauguration of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria. Reprinted from The Star Johannesburg, it combines a concise narrative history of the Great Trek with a pictorial record of the inauguration celebrations, illustrated with black and white photographs, maps and period drawings.
The booklet includes a foreword by Dr. E. G. Jansen and features contemporary images of the monument, trek routes and the commemorative festivities held at the official opening. The Saga of the Great Trek is an evocative piece of South African historical ephemera and would appeal to collectors of Africana, Voortrekker Monument material, Great Trek history, Pretoria history and Boer War-era or Afrikaner cultural memorabilia.
