The Sailing Ship: Six Thousand Years of History by Romola and R. C. Anderson was first published in 1926. This copy is the Hugh Evelyn edition, published from 9 Fitzroy Square, London, by arrangement with George G. Harrap & Co. and W. W. Norton & Company, carrying a 1963 copyright notice and printed in the United States of America.
The Sailing Ship traces the sailing ship from its beginnings in the ancient Mediterranean and Egypt, through the Northern European ships, to the moment in the fifteenth century when these streams united to produce the full-rigged ship. It then follows the evolution of that standard type, culminating in the clipper ships of the nineteenth century, until the sailing ship was finally overtaken by steam. The text is accompanied by over a hundred and thirty drawings and diagrams and twenty half-tone plates.
R. C. Anderson was one of the great authorities on the history of the ship and a founder of the Society for Nautical Research. The Sailing Ship remains a standard, readable introduction to how ships and their rigs developed over six thousand years.
The Sailing Ship will appeal to maritime historians, ship modellers, sailors, and collectors of nautical books.
