The Salamander and the Fire

The Salamander and the Fire is a compelling anthology of wartime short fiction by Dan Davin, first published in 1986.  This distinctive collection brings together Davin’s war stories drawn from his own experiences and reflections as a New Zealand soldier and intelligence officer during the Second World War. Set primarily against the harsh yet vividly realised landscapes of the Middle East and Italian campaigns, the stories explore the reality of combat, camaraderie and the psychological complexity of soldiers far from home.

In The Salamander and the Fire, Davin’s writing captures both the action of warfare and the quieter moments between battles where fear, boredom, humour and humanity intersect. Characters — largely members of the New Zealand Division — are portrayed with nuance; they confront danger in the deserts and mountains of World War II campaigns, engage in moments of idle banter, reflect on leadership and grapple with the immense pressures of conflict. Among the included stories is “The General and the Nightingale,” which honours Davin’s commanding officer and provides insight into leadership and loyalty in times of crisis.

What sets The Salamander and the Fire apart is its combination of literary skill and lived experience. Davin’s prose balances stark depictions of war with empathetic characterisation, offering readers not only gripping narratives but also an emotional resonance that lingers long after finishing the book. This makes the collection a compelling read for lovers of historical fiction, military literature and anyone interested in the personal dimensions of war.
