The Salvation Army Tune Book with Supplement is a substantial vintage collection of music prepared for congregational singing within the Salvation Army. Published by Salvationist Publishing & Supplies Ltd., Judd Street, King’s Cross, London, the volume contains musical settings for important and popular tunes referenced in The Salvation Army Song Book.
Produced under the authority of The General, The Salvation Army Tune Book represents the strong musical tradition that has played an important role in Salvation Army worship since the organisation’s early years. Salvation Army music became particularly distinctive through its combination of congregational hymn singing, brass bands and evangelical worship, and surviving historical tune books provide an interesting record of that tradition.
This edition includes the Supplement, as stated prominently on the front board, increasing the range of tunes contained in the volume. At 193 pages, it is a practical musical reference rather than simply a collection of hymn texts, making The Salvation Army Tune Book of interest to musicians as well as collectors of religious and Salvation Army material.
The hardcover binding is particularly attractive, with blue cloth boards featuring a blind-stamped decorative border and gilt-stamped title and Salvation Army crest on the front. The spine is also gilt lettered. The Salvation Army Tune Book was printed in Great Britain by The Campfield Press, St. Albans.
Condition – Very Good
Very good 193-page hardcover. The blue cloth boards have a blind-stamped border with gilt title and Salvation Army crest to the front board and gilt lettering to the spine. There are numerous unidentified white spots or marks across the blue cloth, together with some general shelf wear, particularly around the corners and extremities. Internally, there is prior ownership in ink on the inner cover. Tape stains are present on both endpapers and foxing is present. Binding remains sound.
