The Scottish Railway Book by John Thomas was published in 1977 by David & Charles of Newton Abbot, Devon, the leading British publisher of railway history at the time. It was printed and bound in Great Britain by Redwood Burn and issued in pictorial laminated boards, carrying ISBN 0 7153 7324 2.
John Thomas was one of the best-known writers on Scottish railways, and in The Scottish Railway Book he gathers the story of the lines, companies, locomotives and people that shaped rail travel in Scotland. The cover alone sets the tone, with Victorian tank engines, a great driving wheel being oiled, a country station platform and a later electric locomotive at a terminus.
Scotland’s railways have a character all their own, from the rivalry of the old pre-Grouping companies to the Highland lines and the busy routes of the Central Belt. The Scottish Railway Book brings that history together in one accessible volume by an author who knew the subject intimately.
This will appeal to railway enthusiasts, collectors of David & Charles transport titles, modellers looking for period detail, and anyone with an interest in Scottish social and industrial history.
Condition – Good
