Originally published in 1885 and reissued in this attractive illustrated edition in 1982, The Shire Highlands by John Buchanan remains one of the most important firsthand accounts of nineteenth-century Malawi and the Shire Highlands region. Buchanan was among the earliest European settlers in the area and provides a fascinating contemporary record of the geography, peoples, agriculture, wildlife, and colonial development of what was then British Central Africa.
This limited numbered edition of The Shire Highlands, restricted to only 1,000 copies, was produced in Malawi and has become increasingly sought after by collectors of Africana, Malawi history, missionary history, colonial studies, and exploration literature. Rich in historical observations and period detail, the work offers invaluable insight into the social and economic conditions of the Shire Highlands during a pivotal period in southern African history.
The Shire Highlands is enhanced by illustrations and quality production standards that make it an attractive addition to any Africana collection. It is particularly desirable for collectors interested in Nyasaland, David Livingstone, early colonial administration, missionary activities, and the development of agriculture and trade in Central Africa.
An increasingly difficult title to source, especially in numbered limited-edition form, The Shire Highlands represents both an important historical resource and a collectible Africana publication from Malawi’s publishing heritage.
