The Story of the Jews by Lewis Browne is one of the more accessible and engaging popular histories of Jewish civilization produced during the early twentieth century. First published in 1926 and later issued as part of Jonathan Cape’s celebrated Travellers’ Library series in 1930, this edition presents Browne’s sweeping narrative of Jewish history from ancient biblical origins through to the modern era. Written in a lively and approachable style, The Story of the Jews became widely respected for introducing general readers to Jewish history, culture, religion, persecution, migration, and resilience across centuries of world history.
Lewis Browne was known for his ability to simplify complex religious and historical subjects for ordinary readers without sacrificing intellectual depth. The Story of the Jews includes maps and chronological tables, making it both informative and practical as a reference work. The Travellers’ Library editions are increasingly collectible today due to their distinctive compact format, attractive blue cloth bindings, and elegant dust jacket designs associated with Jonathan Cape publications of the interwar period.
This particular copy of The Story of the Jews retains its original blue cloth boards with bright gilt titling and decorative motif to the spine, remaining remarkably clean and attractive beneath the heavily worn dust jacket. Although the jacket has suffered significant loss and tearing, it still contributes to the vintage character and collectability of the book. The internal text remains sound and complete, making this a desirable reading and display copy for collectors of Judaica, religious history, Jonathan Cape publications, or early twentieth-century travel and reference series.
The Story of the Jews is an increasingly uncommon Travellers’ Library title that appeals to collectors of Jewish history, theology, antiquarian publishing, and interwar British books.
