The Temple Tiger and More Man-Eaters of Kumaon by Jim Corbett is one of the classic works of twentieth-century hunting, natural history and Indian wildlife literature. Published by Oxford University Press in 1954, this volume brings together some of Corbett’s celebrated accounts of tracking dangerous man-eating tigers through the forests and mountain country of Kumaon in northern India.
This is the desirable 1954 First Edition, published by Oxford University Press under Geoffrey Cumberlege. The Temple Tiger contains 197 pages and is illustrated with black-and-white photographic plates. It is bound in the publisher’s green cloth with a striking gilt tiger’s head device to the front board and gilt lettering to the spine.
The Temple Tiger includes Corbett’s accounts of the Temple Tiger as well as the Muktesar, Panar, Chuka and Talla Des man-eaters. Beyond their dramatic hunting narratives, Corbett’s books remain valued for their observations of Indian wildlife, forests and rural communities. His intimate knowledge of animal behaviour and the Himalayan landscape helped make The Temple Tiger enduringly popular among collectors of hunting, wildlife and natural-history literature.
Importantly, this copy retains its scarce original illustrated dust jacket, with its vivid tiger and jungle artwork. The jacket is unclipped and retains the original 12s 6d net price on the front flap. Even in its distressed state, the survival of the original jacket considerably enhances the appeal of this first-edition copy.
Condition – Very Good hardcover in heavily worn original dust jacket
The green cloth binding remains very good, with bright gilt tiger decoration to the front board and gilt spine lettering. There is a small area of cloth loss near the front hinge and minor general wear. Internally there is foxing present and a previous owner’s gift inscription in ink on the endpaper dated Christmas 1954.
The original unclipped dust jacket is heavily worn, with substantial edge wear, tears, chipping, creasing and notable areas of loss, particularly around the spine ends, corners and lower edges. The jacket nevertheless retains its principal front-cover artwork and original 12s 6d net price. Please refer carefully to the photographs for the extent of the jacket wear.
