The Voyager: The Further Adventures of the Man Who Wanted to Be Robinson Crusoe by Gerald Kingsland is an absorbing true travel memoir that continues the extraordinary story of a man determined to pursue a life of freedom, exploration and self-reliance. Following the success of his earlier adventures, Kingsland once again invites readers aboard as he journeys through the remote islands of the Pacific, documenting the triumphs, hardships and unexpected encounters that define life far from civilisation.
Written in Kingsland’s engaging and conversational style, The Voyager combines adventure, travel writing and personal memoir into a compelling narrative that captures the romance and reality of long-distance voyaging. His vivid descriptions of tropical islands, fascinating local cultures and the ever-changing moods of the ocean make this an enjoyable read for anyone with an interest in exploration, sailing, maritime history or the enduring appeal of Robinson Crusoe-inspired adventures.
Beyond its travel narrative, The Voyager is a story of resilience, independence and the human desire to seek a different way of life. Kingsland’s honest reflections and keen observations create an authentic account that remains relevant decades after its publication. Readers who appreciate classic travel literature by authors who immerse themselves in the places they visit will find much to enjoy in this engaging sequel.
Published by New English Library in 1987, this title has become increasingly difficult to find, particularly in hardcover. The Voyager is an appealing addition to collections of travel writing, nautical literature, Pacific exploration and memoirs of remarkable real-life adventures.
