1 in stock
This attractive mid-century edition of The Works of Rabelais presents the celebrated writings of François Rabelais in a handsome illustrated hardcover format issued by The Bibliophilist Society. Faithfully translated and richly enhanced with the dramatic and highly collectible artwork of Gustave Doré, this edition captures the imaginative spirit, satire, humour, and intellectual depth that have made Rabelais one of the most important figures in Renaissance literature.
Known for works such as Gargantua and Pantagruel, Rabelais combined biting social commentary with absurd comedy, philosophical reflection, and exuberant storytelling. His influence stretches across centuries of European literature and can be seen in writers ranging from Cervantes to Joyce. This edition of The Works of Rabelais offers readers and collectors an opportunity to experience these classic texts in a visually striking format enhanced by Doré’s iconic engravings, which perfectly complement the fantastical and often surreal nature of the narratives.
The volume itself is especially appealing as a decorative shelf piece, featuring a solid hardcover binding with attractive aged character, reddened top text block, and deckled fore edges that add to its classic presentation. The illustrations throughout remain one of the major highlights of this edition, making The Works of Rabelais desirable not only to readers of classic literature but also to collectors of illustrated books and Doré material.
A highly collectible edition ideal for collectors of literary classics, French literature, illustrated works, and vintage decorative bindings. An excellent addition to any private library, study, or classic literature collection.
