The Zambesi Journal of James Stewart 1862–1863 is an important primary-source work relating to nineteenth-century exploration and missionary activity in Central and Southern Africa. Edited by the noted Rhodesian historian and archivist J. P. R. Wallis, this volume presents the journal of James Stewart together with a selection of his correspondence, providing valuable firsthand insight into travel, exploration, indigenous societies, missionary enterprise and colonial-era developments in the Zambezi region during the early 1860s.
Published in 1952 by Chatto & Windus for the Central African Archives, The Zambesi Journal of James Stewart forms part of the significant body of documentary publications issued to preserve historical records relating to Central Africa, Rhodesia, Nyasaland and neighbouring territories. Stewart is perhaps best remembered for his association with missionary work in Africa and his connections to the wider network of explorers and church figures active during the era of David Livingstone. His observations offer researchers and collectors an authentic contemporary perspective on landscapes, peoples, travel conditions and historical events of the period.
Today The Zambesi Journal of James Stewart remains sought after by collectors of Rhodesiana, Africana, missionary history and exploration literature. It is also a useful reference for historians, genealogists and researchers interested in nineteenth-century Central African history. Copies published under the auspices of the Central African Archives have become increasingly desirable as documentary records of a significant period in African exploration and colonial history.
A solid reading and research copy of an enduring Rhodesiana classic.
