Theology for a Scientific Age: Being and Becoming – Natural, Divine and Human by Arthur Peacocke is a significant work exploring the relationship between modern scientific understanding and Christian theology. This second, enlarged edition, published by SCM Press in 1993, substantially develops Peacocke’s attempt to formulate a theology that can engage seriously and constructively with the scientific picture of the natural world.
Arthur Peacocke was uniquely qualified to address this subject. An Anglican priest as well as a scientist, he was a Fellow in Biochemistry at St Peter’s College, Oxford, later Dean of Clare College, Cambridge, and Director of the Ian Ramsey Centre at Oxford. His combined scientific and theological background allowed him to approach questions concerning God, creation, humanity and the natural world from an unusually informed interdisciplinary perspective.
The first two parts of Theology for a Scientific Age examine how theology can remain credible in light of established scientific knowledge, including questions surrounding God’s interaction with the world and the implications of contemporary scientific perspectives. This enlarged edition adds a substantial third part, “Human Being and Becoming,” derived from Peacocke’s 1993 Gifford Lectures at St Andrews. Here he considers natural human existence, science and human behaviour, Jesus of Nazareth, divine and human becoming, reconciliation with God, and the meaning of human life.
An intellectually substantial title for readers interested in science and religion, Christian philosophy, systematic theology, creation, evolution, the philosophy of science and the dialogue between scientific and religious thought. Theology for a Scientific Age is also a useful academic title for theology students, clergy, researchers and readers interested in the long-running debate over how religious belief relates to modern science.
Condition – Very Good
Very good 1993 paperback. Covers show light general shelf wear consistent with age. The top edge of the text block is dust stained. Otherwise a sound and presentable copy.
