To Be a Jewish Woman by Lisa Aiken

To Be a Jewish Woman by Lisa Aiken is a thoughtful and comprehensive exploration of the role, responsibilities, spirituality, and identity of women within Jewish life and tradition. Written by respected psychologist and author Dr. Lisa Aiken, this highly regarded work combines religious scholarship, historical insight, psychology, and practical guidance to provide readers with a balanced understanding of Jewish womanhood.

Drawing upon classical Jewish sources while addressing contemporary questions, Aiken examines the significance of women in Jewish family life, education, religious observance, personal growth, and community leadership. Rather than presenting a purely academic study, To Be a Jewish Woman offers an accessible and engaging discussion that appeals equally to those seeking a deeper understanding of Orthodox Jewish teachings, students of Judaism, converts, educators, and anyone interested in women’s roles within religious traditions.

Praised by Rabbi Mordecai Tendler for its depth and breadth of research, To Be a Jewish Woman remains a valuable resource for readers wishing to explore Jewish values, ethics, and family life through a thoughtful and well-documented perspective. Extensive references and an index make it particularly useful for study and research.

This 1993 first softcover printing is becoming increasingly difficult to source outside specialist Judaica booksellers and represents an excellent addition to collections of Jewish studies, comparative religion, women’s studies, theology, or cultural history. Whether purchased for academic research, synagogue libraries, or personal enrichment, this volume continues to offer meaningful insights into Jewish tradition and the enduring contribution of women within it.
