To Lose a Battle: France 1940 by Alistair Horne is widely regarded as one of the definitive histories of the catastrophic French collapse during the opening years of the Second World War. First published in 1969 by Macmillan, this landmark work combines meticulous research with highly readable narrative history, making it essential for collectors of military history, WWII scholarship, and twentieth-century European history.
Horne masterfully examines the political instability, military shortcomings, strategic errors, and social divisions that contributed to the rapid defeat of France in 1940. Drawing on personal accounts, official documents, and extensive historical sources, he reconstructs the dramatic events surrounding the German Blitzkrieg and the collapse of one of Europe’s great powers. The result is To Lose a Battle: France 1940, both a gripping military study and a profound exploration of national leadership under crisis.
This 1969 first edition hardcover retains its original unclipped dust jacket, now protected in a Brodart-style archival sleeve. The striking period dust jacket design remains highly attractive and displays well on the shelf. To Lose a Battle: France 1940 itself presents exceptionally well, with clean blue cloth boards and bright spine titling.
Alistair Horne’s works have become increasingly collectible, particularly early editions of his major military histories such as The Price of Glory and The Fall of Paris. To Lose a Battle: France 1940 remains a cornerstone title for readers interested in World War II, French military history, strategy, and modern European conflict.
An excellent addition to any serious military history collection or WWII library.
