Tommy Goes Home by Peter Stiff

Tommy Goes Home by Peter Stiff is a gripping and unforgettable African adventure narrative set against the backdrop of political unrest, civil conflict, and survival in Southern Africa. Originally published in 1977 and later reissued by Galago Publishing, this remarkable work tells the true story of German geologist Manfred Forster and his family as they journey across Europe and Africa accompanied by an unlikely travelling companion — a lion named Tommy.

Travelling overland from Germany through Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Angola, Zambia, Botswana and eventually into Rhodesia, the family faces immense dangers during one of Africa’s most unstable periods. Angola was descending into violent conflict following the collapse of Portuguese colonial rule, while competing political and military factions battled for control. Amid these harsh realities, Tommy the lion becomes far more than a pet — serving as protector, companion, and symbol of courage throughout the journey.

Peter Stiff, well known for his military and Southern African historical works, combines factual storytelling with vivid narrative detail, creating a compelling blend of travel writing, wildlife adventure, and African historical memoir. Tommy Goes Home appeals strongly to collectors of Rhodesiana, African travel literature, wildlife stories, military history, and Galago Publishing titles.

Tommy Goes Home remains highly collectible due to its enduring popularity among readers interested in Southern African history, true-life survival stories, and unusual animal-human relationships. An engaging and dramatic account that captures both the beauty and danger of Africa during a turbulent era.
