This scarce two-volume edition of Travels in Southern Africa by French explorer and hunter Adulphe Delegorgue is an important contribution to nineteenth-century Southern African travel literature and Africana studies. Published by the Killie Campbell Africana Library in association with the University of Natal Press, these carefully edited and translated editions make Delegorgue’s fascinating accounts accessible to modern English-speaking readers.
Delegorgue travelled extensively through Southern Africa during the 1830s and 1840s, documenting landscapes, wildlife, indigenous communities, colonial settlements, hunting expeditions, and frontier life during a formative period in regional history. His writings remain highly regarded by historians, anthropologists, collectors of exploration narratives, and researchers interested in early colonial-era observations of Natal, Zululand, and surrounding regions.
Travels in Southern Africa comprises Volume I (1990) and Volume II (1997), both issued in paperback format under the respected Killie Campbell Africana Library imprint. Of particular significance is that Volume I has been signed by translator Fleur Webb together with contributors Stephanie J. Alexander and Colin de B. Webb, greatly enhancing the set’s provenance and collectible appeal.
The scholarly introductions, annotations, maps, and indexing provide valuable historical context while preserving the atmosphere and immediacy of Delegorgue’s original observations. Works issued by the Killie Campbell Africana Library such as Travels in Southern Africa are increasingly sought after within the Africana collecting field, particularly complete sets in superior condition.
An outstanding acquisition for collectors of Africana, South African history, exploration narratives, colonial travel writing, hunting memoirs, and rare Southern African publications. Travels in Southern Africa would also make an excellent addition to academic libraries, historical collections, or private Africana shelves.
