Trekking the Great Thirst: Sport and Travel in the Kalahari Desert is one of the most engaging and sought-after accounts of early twentieth-century travel and hunting in southern Africa. Written by Arnold W. Hodson and originally published in 1912, this work captures the challenges, adventures, and remarkable landscapes encountered during journeys across the vast Kalahari Desert. This 1987 facsimile reprint, issued as Volume 7 of the esteemed African Hunting Reprint Series by Books of Zimbabwe, makes an important and increasingly scarce Africana title available to modern collectors and researchers.
Hodson’s narrative combines exploration, natural history observations, hunting experiences, and detailed descriptions of life in one of Africa’s most demanding environments. Trekking the Great Thirst provides valuable insights into the geography, wildlife, indigenous peoples, and frontier conditions of the Kalahari during a period when much of the region remained little known to the outside world.
Trekking the Great Thirst is particularly appealing to collectors of Africana, African exploration literature, hunting narratives, colonial travel accounts, and Kalahari history. Beyond its sporting content, it serves as an important historical document, preserving observations of landscapes and cultures that have changed significantly over the past century.
The African Hunting Reprint Series has become highly collectible in its own right, with many volumes increasingly difficult to obtain. This edition includes a new foreword by Professor R. S. Roberts and faithfully reproduces the original 1912 text, making Trekking the Great Thirst an excellent addition to collections focused on African travel, hunting, conservation history, and exploration.
