True Raiders: The Untold Story of the 1909 Expedition to Find the Legendary Ark of the Covenant

True Raiders by Brad Ricca, published in 2021 by St. Martin’s Press, is a fascinating blend of history, adventure, and literary investigation that uncovers the real-life inspiration behind one of the most iconic treasure hunts of the modern imagination. In True Raiders, Ricca reconstructs the extraordinary 1909 expedition led by British aristocrat and explorer Montagu Brownlow Parker, whose quest to locate the legendary Ark of the Covenant captured global attention in the early 20th century.

Set against the backdrop of the waning Ottoman Empire, True Raiders follows Parker and his eclectic team as they journey to Jerusalem, driven by a mix of religious conviction, imperial ambition, and personal obsession. Their mission—to uncover sacred relics believed to be hidden beneath the Temple Mount—quickly becomes entangled in secrecy, political intrigue, and mounting tension with local authorities. Ricca brings these events to life with a narrative that reads like a thriller while remaining grounded in meticulous archival research.

A central thread in True Raiders is its connection to popular culture, particularly the parallels between Parker’s expedition and the fictional adventures of Indiana Jones. Ricca explores how this largely forgotten episode of history may have influenced later storytelling, adding an extra layer of intrigue for readers interested in both history and cinema.

Rich in detail and driven by a sense of mystery, True Raiders offers a compelling look at obsession, myth, and the enduring allure of lost treasures. It is an essential read for those drawn to historical enigmas, exploration narratives, and the blurred line between fact and legend.
