Tsotsi is Athol Fugard’s only novel and stands as one of the most important works of twentieth-century South African literature. Set in the townships of Johannesburg during the apartheid era, the novel follows the life of Tsotsi, a young gang leader whose existence is defined by violence, fear and survival. A chance encounter with an abandoned infant becomes the catalyst for a profound journey of self-discovery, forcing him to confront his forgotten past and the possibility of redemption.
Originally written in the 1960s but only published in book form in 1980, Tsotsi is widely regarded as a modern South African classic. Fugard’s powerful narrative explores themes of poverty, humanity, identity and social injustice while providing an unflinching portrait of life under apartheid. The novel later achieved international acclaim through its Academy Award-winning film adaptation, further cementing its place in South African literary history.
This scarce South African first edition Tsotsi was published by A.D. Donker and features striking dust jacket artwork by renowned South African artist Cecil Skotnes. First editions remain highly sought after by collectors of Africana, South African literature, anti-apartheid works and Athol Fugard material.
Condition – Fair
The dust jacket is very worn and fragile, with heavy rubbing, creasing, edge wear, multiple closed tears, chipping and paper loss, especially to the spine ends, corners and top edges. Page block is age-toned with foxing/spotting to edges.
