Under My Skin by Doris Lessing

Under My Skin: Volume One of My Autobiography, to 1949 is the first volume of Nobel Prize-winning author Doris Lessing’s acclaimed autobiography. Covering her life from childhood in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) through to her arrival in London in 1949, this candid memoir offers an illuminating account of the personal experiences, relationships and historical events that shaped one of the twentieth century’s most influential literary figures.

Written with the intelligence and honesty for which Lessing became renowned, the memoir explores her upbringing on an African farm, family life, early marriages, motherhood, political awakening and the development of her identity as a writer. It also provides valuable insight into colonial society in Southern Africa, making Under My Skin of interest not only to readers of biography but also to those studying African history, social history and twentieth-century literature.
