Under the Blue Roof – Scarce 1923 Africana memoir recounting settler life in the Transvaal backveld between 1908 and 1921, offering a rare firsthand glimpse into pioneering rural South Africa.
1 in stock
Published in 1923, Under the Blue Roof is a scarce and highly evocative Africana memoir documenting life in the Transvaal backveld during the years 1908 to 1921. Written by C. R. Prance and privately printed shortly after the period described, the work offers an authentic first-hand account of pioneering life in one of South Africa’s most remote rural regions.
Drawing upon fourteen years of personal experience, Prance recounts the challenges, triumphs and everyday realities of life on the frontier. The sketches contained within Under the Blue Roof were largely adapted from articles originally published in periodicals including The Spectator, South African Gardening and the Farmer’s Weekly of Bloemfontein. Together they provide valuable insights into farming practices, bushveld life, local communities, wildlife encounters and the social conditions of the early twentieth-century Transvaal.
Unlike formal historical studies, Under the Blue Roof presents an intimate and personal perspective of South African settler life, making it particularly desirable to collectors of Africana, colonial history, farming history and regional South African literature. The uncommon blue suede binding and private-press production further enhance its appeal as a collectible item.
Scarce Africana titles relating to the Transvaal backveld seldom appear on the market, especially in original bindings. Under the Blue Roof represents an important record of a formative period in South African history and would make an excellent addition to any collection of Africana, local history, pioneer memoirs or South African settlement literature.
Condition – Very Good
Scarce 95-page blue suede-covered softcover with gilt-stamped title to the upper cover. The spine is heavily sunned and exhibits a historic insect penetration hole. Internally, evidence of old insect damage is present at the inner hinge extending through to the dedication page, resulting in some fragility to the front section of the book. The text remains generally clean and legible with light age toning and occasional foxing. Binding remains intact despite the noted weakness. An uncommon and desirable privately printed Africana title.
