Historic 1902 Coronation medal of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, issued after the rescheduled ceremony and featuring classic Edwardian portrait designs.
1 in stock
A large and historically significant Coronation medal issued to commemorate the crowning of Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark on 9 August 1902. This medal captures a pivotal moment in British royal history and remains a desirable collectible from the Edwardian era.
Originally intended for a coronation on 26 June 1902, the ceremony was postponed after King Edward VII required emergency surgery for appendicitis. As a result, the first batch of medals bearing the June date were withdrawn and melted, and new medals were struck with the revised date of 9 August 1902, making these corrected issues historically important.
The obverse features a crowned and robed bust of King Edward VII facing right. Beneath the portrait is a laurel branch tied with ribbon, symbolising victory and honour.
Legend:
“EDWARD VII CROWNED 9.AUGUST 1902”
The reverse depicts a crowned and veiled bust of Queen Alexandra facing right. Below the portrait are branches of rose, with a ribbon bearing the date.
Legend:
“ALEXANDRA QUEEN CONSORT”
Ribbon below: “9.AUG.1902”
Issued for the rescheduled coronation (9 August 1902)
Earlier 26 June-dated medals were melted and reissued
Originally housed in a red leather case with gilt “EVIIR” monogram
Total recorded mintage: 7,811 pieces (BHM reference)
This example is offered without original case
Official Coronation commemorative
Linked to a unique historical event (postponed coronation)
Classic Edwardian royal portrait medal
Strong appeal to royal, historical, and medal collectors
Fine surface hairline scratches are visible on both sides under close inspection. Overall, the medal remains well preserved with clear detail and attractive appearance for its age.
