The 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar was issued by the United States as part of the ongoing tribute to John F. Kennedy, following his assassination in 1963. First introduced in 1964, the Kennedy Half Dollar quickly became one of the most iconic modern American coins.
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of President John F. Kennedy, designed by Gilroy Roberts, with the inscription “LIBERTY” above and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” below. The date 1966 appears at the bottom.
The reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro, displays the Presidential Seal of the United States, featuring a heraldic eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, with a ring of stars above. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “HALF DOLLAR” surround the design.
Coins dated 1965–1967 were struck without mint marks due to a U.S. Mint policy aimed at discouraging hoarding during a coin shortage. The 1966 issue was produced in large quantities and saw limited circulation, as many were saved by the public.
This coin is struck in 40% silver, making it desirable both for its historical significance and intrinsic silver content.
