Vuur op die Horison by Engela van Rooyen

Spanning several generations and continents, Vuur op die Horison follows the fortunes of the Viljoen family of Grootverlangen near the Magaliesberg and the aristocratic Dalmain family of England. As political tensions escalate towards war, the lives of these families become intertwined through personal relationships, military conflict and difficult choices. From the goldfields of the Transvaal to Victorian Britain and beyond, Van Rooyen vividly recreates a period marked by uncertainty, ambition and profound human suffering.

Although rooted in historical events, Vuur op die Horison remains fundamentally a story about people, examining the emotional consequences of conflict, separation, loss and enduring love.

Representing a major milestone in Engela van Rooyen’s literary career, this substantial work was her hundredth book and the result of approximately ten years of writing and research. Vuur op die Horison is an important contribution to Afrikaans historical fiction and offers an absorbing perspective on the Anglo-Boer War through the experiences of richly developed fictional characters.
