“Waterloo” by John Naylor is a compelling and highly readable account of one of the most decisive battles in European history — the Battle of Waterloo of 1815, where the forces of the Duke of Wellington and Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher finally defeated Napoleon Bonaparte. Published by B. T. Batsford Ltd in 1960, this second impression hardcover captures both the military strategy and dramatic human story behind the campaign that reshaped Europe.
John Naylor’s “Waterloo” remains respected among collectors and readers of Napoleonic military history for its accessible narrative style combined with careful historical detail. The volume explores the lead-up to the battle, troop movements, battlefield tactics, and the personalities involved, making it appealing to both dedicated military historians and general readers interested in European history. Batsford military titles from this era are also increasingly collectible due to their quality production, period dust jackets, and enduring historical appeal.
This edition is particularly attractive with its original blue cloth boards featuring gilt titling and decorative spine detail. The classic illustrated dust jacket depicting Wellington on horseback gives the book strong shelf appeal for collectors of military and historical works. Titles focusing specifically on Waterloo continue to enjoy steady demand internationally and within South Africa, especially among collectors of British military history, Napoleonic campaigns, and 19th-century warfare.
An excellent addition to any military history library, Napoleonic collection, or bookshelf devoted to European conflict and strategy.
Condition – Very Good
1960 second impression hardcover in very good condition. Original unclipped dust jacket shows notable wear, including edge wear and a tear to the bottom of the front cover. Blue cloth boards with gilt titling and decoration on the spine remain attractive with light shelf wear and what appears to be a faint cup stain. Internally clean and well preserved overall, with only minor ink writing present on the endpaper. Binding remains sound.
