We Rest Here Content

We Rest Here Content – The Monuments and Headstones of the Imperial Light Horse Regiment, compiled by Robin Smith and published privately by Robin Smith in 2023, is a carefully researched and deeply respectful record of the memorial landscape associated with one of South Africa’s most storied military units. The Imperial Light Horse Regiment, formed during the Anglo-Boer War, occupies a significant place in South African and Commonwealth military history, and this volume serves as both a documentary resource and a work of remembrance.

In We Rest Here Content, Robin Smith brings together detailed information on monuments, memorials, and individual headstones connected to members of the Imperial Light Horse Regiment. The book traces where these memorials are located, the historical circumstances behind them, and the individuals they commemorate. Through inscriptions, locations, and contextual notes, the work reveals how memory, sacrifice, and regimental identity have been preserved in stone across decades. It offers readers insight not only into military service but also into the evolving ways communities and comrades have chosen to honour the fallen.

The strength of this 2023 publication lies in its methodical compilation and clarity of purpose. Smith approaches the subject with precision and respect, making the book valuable to military historians, genealogists, descendants of regiment members, and collectors of South African military history. The focus on physical memorials gives the work a tangible quality, grounding historical narrative in real places that continue to bear witness to past lives and conflicts.

We Rest Here Content – The Monuments and Headstones of the Imperial Light Horse Regiment stands as an important modern contribution to regimental history. As a privately published work, it also reflects a personal commitment to preservation and remembrance, making it a meaningful and increasingly relevant title for collectors interested in South African history, military heritage, and commemorative studies.
