White Man’s Country: Lord Delamere and the Making of Kenya by Elspeth Huxley is a classic historical account of the early European settlement of Kenya and the life of Hugh Cholmondeley, 3rd Baron Delamere, one of the most influential figures in the development of colonial East Africa.
First published in 1935, White Man’s Country draws on extensive archival material and firsthand accounts to document the transformation of the East Africa Protectorate during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Huxley’s narrative explores the complex history of colonial settlement, agriculture, and politics that shaped modern Kenya.
This example is Volume One (1870–1914) of the work and retains both original fold-out maps, including the map of the East Africa Protectorate. White Man’s Country is bound in the publisher’s green cloth with gilt titling to the spine, which remains bright and well preserved.
A sought-after work of African colonial history, particularly relevant to collectors interested in Kenya, British Empire history, and East African exploration and settlement.
Published by Chatto & Windus, London.
Condition – Very Good
Green cloth boards with gilt titling to the spine, which remains bright and in excellent condition with only minor edge wear. The original dust jacket is present but shows significant wear and damage including losses and small holes as shown. Internally the book remains sound, with some fluid staining visible on the early pages. Both fold-out maps are present and intact. Overall a solid and complete reading or reference copy of this important East African historical work.
