A highly desirable collector’s edition of Wild Flowers of the Transvaal, one of the most beautiful and important South African botanical works of the twentieth century. Published in 1962 by the Wild Flowers of the Transvaal Book Fund, this Subscribers’ Special Edition was limited to only 600 copies, of which this example is number 78.
Wild Flowers of the Transvaal showcases the exquisite botanical artistry of renowned South African artist Cythna Letty, whose detailed colour illustrations capture the remarkable diversity and beauty of the flora of the former Transvaal region. Accompanying text was contributed by distinguished botanists R.A. Dyer, Inez C. Verdoorn and L.E. Codd, with a foreword by the celebrated botanist Dr Louisa Bolus, making this an important scientific as well as artistic publication.
Of particular interest to collectors, this copy of Wild Flowers of the Transvaal bears the signatures of Cythna Letty and John Voelcker, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, on the limitation page. Subscriber copies are increasingly difficult to locate, especially in such attractive condition and retaining the original dust jacket.
A cornerstone work for collectors of Africana, South African flora, botanical illustration, wildflower studies and natural history literature. Its combination of scientific significance, exceptional artwork, limited-edition status and association signatures makes it a particularly appealing acquisition for serious collectors, institutions and botanical enthusiasts.
Wild Flowers of the Transvaal is an increasingly scarce title that seldom appears on the market in signed subscriber form and remains one of the landmark works on South African wildflowers.
