Wild Life – Amazing Animals, Extraordinary People, Astonishing Places is the memoir of Simon King, one of Britain’s best-known wildlife film-makers and presenters. First published in hardcover by Hodder & Stoughton in 2009, this is the 2010 paperback edition (third printing), which became a Sunday Times top ten bestseller.
Born in Nairobi in 1964, King was drawn to the natural world from early childhood, and Wild Life opens with the encounters of those first years in Kenya: rhinos, elephants and a long list of birds and other creatures that only fed his curiosity. From there he follows his professional life, which began with an acting role in the television drama The Fox at the age of ten and went on to include work on Planet Earth, Blue Planet, Springwatch, Autumnwatch and Big Cat Diary.
What sets Wild Life apart from a straightforward career story is the way King weaves his animal stories in with the people he has worked alongside and the places that shaped him. The tone is honest, warm and often funny, and readers who followed his cheetah and big cat filming on the Kenyan plains will find plenty of behind-the-camera insight.
