With Shield and Assegai: A Tale of the Zulu War by Lt.-Colonel F. S. Brereton is a classic adventure novel set against the dramatic backdrop of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. First published in 1899 by Blackie & Son, this popular historical novel follows a young Scottish protagonist whose fortunes become intertwined with one of the most famous conflicts in South African history. Blending historical events with fast-paced adventure, Brereton recreates iconic battles including Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift and Ulundi while weaving a compelling coming-of-age story that appealed to generations of young readers.
This undated Blackie & Son edition of With Shield and Assegai retains its highly desirable original olive-green pictorial cloth binding, beautifully decorated in black and white with a striking illustration of a Zulu warrior carrying shield and assegai. The matching illustrated spine makes this an especially attractive shelf copy, while the interior features dramatic black-and-white illustrations by Stanley L. Wood that vividly capture the atmosphere of the campaign. With Shield and Assegai comprises approximately 320 pages and remains an excellent example of early twentieth-century juvenile historical fiction.
Collectors of Anglo-Zulu War literature, Rhodesiana, Africana, military history and illustrated Edwardian adventure novels will appreciate this edition for both its historical interest and decorative appeal. Brereton’s works remain sought after by collectors of G.A. Henty-style historical fiction, particularly titles dealing with British military campaigns in southern Africa. Whether purchased as a collectible, for research, or simply as an engaging period adventure, With Shield and Assegai represents an enduring classic from one of Britain’s best-known military adventure writers. The attractive original binding and complete illustrated text ensure it remains a worthwhile addition to any collection of Africana, Zulu War history or vintage boys’ fiction.
Condition – Very Good
Undated hardcover in original green pictorial cloth with black and white illustrations on both the front cover and spine. Moderate wear to the spine ends, corners and extremities. Binding remains firm and sound. A prior ownership plate has been tipped onto the front endpaper, covering an earlier gift inscription dated December 1928. Foxing and age-related page discolouration are present throughout, consistent with the book’s age, but the text and illustrations remain complete and easily readable.
