The 1898 One Penny of the South African Republic (ZAR) is a classic copper coin from the late 19th century, issued during the presidency of Paul Kruger. These coins were struck in the years leading up to the Second Boer War, making them historically significant pieces of pre-war Boer coinage.
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of President Paul Kruger, affectionately known as “Oom Paul”, a central figure in Boer history. The inscription “SUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK” surrounds the portrait, identifying the issuing authority in Dutch, the official language of the republic at the time.
The reverse displays the denomination “1 PENNY” within a decorative wreath, with the date 1898 below. The simple yet elegant design reflects the practical nature of copper coinage used for everyday transactions in the ZAR.
Struck in bronze, these pennies circulated widely in the Transvaal and are today among the most recognisable coins of South African numismatics. Their association with Paul Kruger and the turbulent events of the late 19th century makes them especially appealing to collectors.
