Reminiscences of the Last Kafir War by James McKay, published in 1970 by C. Struik (Pty) Ltd, is a notable firsthand narrative of one of the frontier conflicts that shaped nineteenth-century South African history. The book is a facsimile reprint of the original 1871 memoir written by McKay, who served as a sergeant in the 74th Highlanders during the Eighth Frontier War of 1850–1853. As part of Struik’s Africana Collectanea series, the 1970 edition preserves this rare soldier’s account of the campaign on the eastern frontier of the Cape Colony.
In Reminiscences of the Last Kafir War, McKay recounts his experiences during the conflict from the perspective of a non-commissioned officer serving in the ranks. Unlike official military reports or the memoirs of senior officers, the narrative provides a vivid ground-level view of campaigning in the rugged landscapes of the Eastern Cape. McKay describes marches through dense bush and mountain passes, the establishment of frontier camps, patrols and skirmishes, and the constant uncertainty faced by soldiers operating in unfamiliar terrain. His observations offer readers a detailed sense of the daily routines, hardships, and occasional moments of humour experienced by British troops on colonial service.
A distinctive feature of Reminiscences of the Last Kafir War is its candid portrayal of the people and conditions encountered on the frontier. McKay writes about fellow soldiers, colonial settlers, local African communities, and the auxiliary forces who participated in the conflict. His recollections include anecdotes of battlefield engagements, logistical challenges, and the difficulties of moving artillery and supplies through mountainous country where roads were scarce. The narrative provides valuable insight into the realities of mid-nineteenth-century frontier warfare and the complex social environment of the Cape Colony during this turbulent period.
Today, Reminiscences of the Last Kafir War remains an important primary source for historians and collectors of Africana. The Struik 1970 edition helped preserve a scarce nineteenth-century memoir and introduced it to a wider readership interested in South African military history. For collectors of frontier war literature and historical memoirs, Reminiscences of the Last Kafir War offers a compelling and historically significant account of life and conflict on the colonial frontier.
