The Iliad and Odyssey in this handsome 1933 Dent’s Double Volumes edition combines the two great epic poems into a single substantial volume. Published by J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. as part of their short-lived “Double Volumes” series, this edition presents The Iliad in Lord Derby’s translation and The Odyssey in William Cowper’s translation. Originally issued in two volumes in 1910, it was reissued in this single-volume format in 1933, making it one of the earliest and most desirable printings of the Dent double-volume edition.
The book retains its original dust jacket, which is edge worn and noticeably faded to the spine, but remains complete and attractive. The rust-colored cloth boards beneath are in excellent condition with bright gilt lettering still crisp on the spine, giving the volume excellent shelf presence. This is a particularly appealing copy of The Iliad and Odyssey of Homer for collectors seeking an early Everyman-style Homer edition in its original jacket.
Condition – Very Good
In a Fair to Good original dust jacket. Jacket edge worn with fading and wear to the spine. Rust-colored cloth boards remain excellent with bright gilt. Edges of the text block are dust stained and foxing is present internally, though the volume remains sound, clean, and highly readable.
