The Second Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling is a classic collection of adventure and animal stories, presented here in an attractive 1931 Macmillan and Co. hardcover edition. First published in 1895 as the sequel to The Jungle Book, this enduring work continues Kipling’s celebrated tales of the Indian jungle and includes further stories centred on Mowgli as well as other memorable characters and settings.
This edition of The Second Jungle Book retains the distinctive traditional Macmillan presentation, bound in blue cloth with elaborate gilt decoration to the spine and a gilt elephant medallion to the front board. The decorative elements are based on the work of J. Lockwood Kipling, Rudyard Kipling’s father, whose illustrations and ornamental designs are closely associated with the early editions of the Jungle Books. The gilt detailing remains particularly attractive and gives this vintage volume considerable shelf presence.
Among the best-known stories contained in The Second Jungle Book are How Fear Came, The Miracle of Purun Bhagat, Letting in the Jungle, The Undertakers, The King’s Ankus, Quiquern and Red Dog, together with accompanying verse. Mowgli’s adventures further explore his relationship with the jungle, its animals and its laws, helping make the two Jungle Books enduring classics of English literature.
Published in London by Macmillan and Co., Limited in 1931, this is an appealing early 20th-century edition for collectors of Rudyard Kipling, vintage children’s literature, illustrated classics and decorative cloth-bound books.
