The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley

The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley is one of the enduring classics of nineteenth-century British children’s literature, combining fantasy, adventure, morality and social commentary in the remarkable story of Tom, a young chimney sweep whose life is transformed when he enters an extraordinary underwater world.

Originally published in 1863, Kingsley’s imaginative tale follows Tom through a succession of strange encounters and adventures after he becomes a “water-baby”. Beneath its fairy-tale surface, the story explores ideas of personal growth, responsibility, kindness, education and Victorian society. Kingsley populated his fantasy with memorable characters and curious creatures, creating a work that has remained in print in numerous editions for generations.

This vintage edition The Water Babies was published by Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd, the long-established British publishing house responsible for numerous popular editions of children’s classics. The book is bound in understated two-tone boards, with The Water Babies printed on the front. The publisher’s imprint lists its Edinburgh, London, Melbourne, Cape Town, Toronto, New York and Paris offices.

Of additional historical interest is the presentation inscription on the front endpaper, recording the book as a Prize Awarded to Jill Scott for Handwriting, July 1951. This provides a useful period provenance and strongly suggests that this particular copy was already in circulation by 1951.
