The Great Trek by C. Venter is an illustrated account of one of the defining episodes of nineteenth-century Southern African history. Published by Don Nelson in Cape Town in 1985 as part of the Heritage Series: 19th Century, this first-edition hardcover examines the causes, course and historical significance of the Great Trek and the remarkable people who participated in it.
Beginning with the circumstances that encouraged increasing numbers of Cape colonists to move beyond the established boundaries of the Cape Colony, Venter places the migration within the wider political and social environment of nineteenth-century Southern Africa. The Great Trek considers the Trekboers, British colonial policy, the Voortrekkers and their encounters with African kingdoms and communities as they moved into the interior.
Important personalities and episodes associated with the Great Trek are discussed, including figures such as Piet Retief, Louis Trichardt, Andries Potgieter and Gert Maritz, together with events involving Mzilikazi, the Ndebele, Natal and the movement of the Voortrekker parties across the South African interior.
One of the book’s particular strengths is its visual presentation. Historical photographs, paintings, drawings and maps complement the text, helping to illustrate the wagons, people, landscapes and material culture associated with the Trek. At approximately 80 pages, The Great Trek provides an accessible introduction without the density of a large academic history.
An attractive addition to a collection of Africana, Voortrekker history, South African colonial history or nineteenth-century Southern African history, particularly as this is the 1985 first edition of The Great Trek in its original illustrated dust jacket.
