Lafite: The Story of Château Lafite-Rothschild by renowned British wine writer Cyril Ray is an important and highly collectable study of one of the world’s most celebrated wine estates. Published by Peter Davies in London in 1968, this is the first edition, issued to mark a century of Rothschild ownership of Château Lafite.
Ray explores the history, traditions, vineyards and wines of Château Lafite-Rothschild, the legendary Pauillac estate classified as a First Growth in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Drawing upon his familiarity with Lafite and time spent at the château while researching the book, Ray combines wine history with an intimate portrait of the estate, its people and its place within the history of Bordeaux.
Particular attention is given to the Rothschild family’s association with Lafite, its winemaking traditions and its longstanding rivalry with neighbouring Château Mouton-Rothschild. The book goes beyond a conventional guide to wine, examining the château itself, the vineyard, cellar practices and the personalities responsible for maintaining the reputation of one of Bordeaux’s greatest names.
Illustrated with photographic plates and additional illustrations, this 162-page volume has considerable appeal to collectors of wine literature, Bordeaux history and Rothschild material. The original dust jacket features the Château Lafite-Rothschild label design commemorating 1868–1968, making this first edition especially attractive as a period piece.
A desirable specialist wine title by one of Britain’s best-known twentieth-century wine writers and an excellent addition to a serious wine, Bordeaux or culinary collection.
Condition – Very Good
Very good 1968 hardcover in a good, moderately worn original dust jacket. The red cloth boards feature a blind-stamped Château Lafite-Rothschild device to the front and gilt lettering and decoration to the spine. There is noticeable discolouration/fading along the upper and lower portions of the front board, together with general age-related shelf wear.
Internally the volume remains very good. A previous-owner ink inscription is present on the front endpaper, together with some faint pencil markings. The inscription is not represented as being by the author.
