Boletim Trimestral Nº 87/88 – Terceiro e Quarto Trimestres de 1971 by Banco Nacional Ultramarino

Boletim Trimestral Nº 87/88 – Terceiro e Quarto Trimestres de 1971 is a scarce Portuguese-language quarterly bulletin published by the Banco Nacional Ultramarino in Lisbon. This 62-page issue combines banking history, economic studies and an important specialist contribution to the monetary history of São Tomé and Príncipe, making it particularly interesting to collectors of African numismatics and Portuguese colonial material.

The principal numismatic article is “Documentos e Notas para Cinco Séculos de História – Da Moeda e Fazenda em S. Tomé” by P. António Ambrósio. Extending across a substantial portion of the publication, Boletim Trimestral Nº 87/88 examines centuries of monetary and financial history in São Tomé, drawing upon historical documents and records. Of particular interest are the glossy illustrated plates depicting historic São Tomé coinage, including early copper issues and later Portuguese colonial coins.

Boletim Trimestral Nº 87/88 also contains “Armand Fabri, Um Grande Servidor do B.N.U.”, commemorating the long-serving Banco Nacional Ultramarino official Armand Fabri, together with “Custo de Vida e Nível de Vida”, a contemporary economic study comparing living costs and standards of living internationally.

Founded in 1864, Banco Nacional Ultramarino played a central role in banking and currency issuance throughout Portugal’s overseas territories. Original institutional publications such as this provide valuable primary-source material for researchers of colonial banking, monetary history and African economic history.
