This exceptionally rare Malawian historical medal was issued to commemorate the 1979 Royal Visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Malawi, hosted by Hastings Kamuzu Banda. Struck by Spink & Sons Ltd in London, this medal is believed to have been produced in an extremely limited quantity of just 50 pieces, making it a highly desirable and seldom-seen collectible.
According to available information, a single gold example was reportedly presented to Queen Elizabeth II during her visit, with the remaining pieces struck in base metal for official or presentation purposes. A cardboard gift note dated 1993, found within the original case, further supports the extremely low mintage.
The medal is large and impressive, measuring 57 mm in diameter and approximately 3 mm thick, giving it strong presence and display appeal.
The obverse features a portrait of President Hastings Kamuzu Banda, with the inner inscription “PRESIDENT KAMUZU BANDA”. The outer legend reads:
“ULENDO WA HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II KUMALAWI JULY 1979”
Below the portrait appears a small emblem of a lion passant guardant above a rising sun over waves, enclosed within a circular border.
The reverse displays a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with the inner inscription “QUEEN ELIZABETH II”. The outer legend reads:
“THE VISIT OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II TO MALAWI JULY 1979”
Below the bust is the Royal Coat of Arms, enclosed within a circular border, reinforcing the official and ceremonial nature of the issue.
Condition – XF
There is a rim bump at approximately 7:30 on the President Banda side, likely from being dropped. The fields on both obverse and reverse show very fine surface hairlines, visible under close inspection. Overall, the medal remains highly presentable with strong detail and attractive reflective surfaces.
