A History of Natal by Edgar H. Brookes and Colin de B. Webb is an important scholarly account of the historical development of Natal, now forming a major part of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Produced by two respected academics with strong connections to the study of South African history, the work provides a wide-ranging examination of the region from its earlier indigenous history through European settlement, colonial administration and the complex political and social developments that followed.
A History of Natal explores the interaction between African communities, particularly the Zulu kingdom and neighbouring peoples, and the expanding European presence in southeastern Africa. It examines the establishment and development of the Colony of Natal, relations between settlers and indigenous populations, political administration, economic change and the development of institutions that influenced the province well into the twentieth century.
Published by the University of Natal Press, this substantial volume has become a useful reference for historians, researchers, genealogists and collectors of Africana. A History of Natal is particularly relevant to collectors building libraries concerned with Natal, Zululand, Pietermaritzburg, Durban and the wider historical development of KwaZulu-Natal.
