Aesop’s Foibles is a charming and distinctive literary work edited and illustrated by Oscar Berger, first published in 1951 by Hutchinson & Co. Rather than simply retelling the famous fables of Aesop, Berger presents a witty and imaginative collection that combines timeless observations on human nature with a remarkable selection of six hundred quotations drawn from the great minds of history.
Beautifully illustrated throughout by Berger himself, the book offers a unique blend of humour, wisdom, satire, and social commentary. Each piece reflects the enduring relevance of Aesop’s insights while connecting them to the thoughts and observations of philosophers, writers, statesmen, and notable figures from across the centuries. The result is Aesop’s Foibles, a work that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, appealing equally to lovers of literature, quotation collections, classical studies, and illustrated books.
Published during the post-war period, this volume embodies the elegant simplicity and intellectual curiosity characteristic of quality British publishing of the era. Aesop’s Foibles remains an attractive addition to collections of literary humour, reference works, and illustrated books. Copies are increasingly encountered in private libraries and specialist collections due to their unusual format and enduring appeal.
An engaging volume for readers who appreciate wisdom literature, classic quotations, and the enduring lessons of Aesop presented through a fresh and imaginative twentieth-century lens.
