Ayesha: The Return of She by H. Rider Haggard, published in 1905 by Ward, Lock & Co. Limited, is the dramatic sequel to Haggard’s celebrated romance She. Continuing the saga of the mysterious and immortal Ayesha, this Edwardian edition brings readers back into the richly imagined world of lost civilizations, reincarnation, and supernatural destiny that made the original novel a sensation of late Victorian adventure fiction.
In Ayesha: The Return of She, Haggard reunites readers with Professor Horace Holly and Leo Vincey as they journey across Asia in search of the reincarnated spirit of the enigmatic queen Ayesha. Set against vividly described landscapes of Tibet and Central Asia, the novel blends exploration narrative with mystical philosophy, romance, and high adventure. Haggard’s storytelling combines suspense, exoticism, and metaphysical speculation, exploring themes of eternal love, fate, power, and the limits of human understanding. The figure of Ayesha herself—commanding, beautiful, and perilous—remains one of the most compelling creations in popular adventure literature.
The 1905 Ward, Lock & Co. Limited edition of Ayesha: The Return of She reflects the height of imperial-era romance fiction, when tales of distant lands and hidden kingdoms captivated British readers. This volume is highly sought after by collectors of classic adventure novels and fans of Haggard’s influential body of work. It stands as a vivid example of early twentieth-century imaginative fiction, continuing the legend of “She Who Must Be Obeyed” with drama, atmosphere, and enduring appeal.
Condition: Very Good – Original publisher’s green cloth with embossed decorative motif and gilt titling to the upper board and spine. The binding remains firm and structurally sound, presenting well on the shelf; the lighter green spine inlays are faded with age. Externally a well-preserved example overall. Text block edges show noticeable foxing and age-related discoloration. Prior ownership inscription in ink to the inner cover. The front endpaper is lacking. Internally complete, with all pages and illustrations present as called for, though heavy foxing is evident throughout the text. A solid and honest early Ward Lock & Co. copy, retaining strong period character despite the noted condition points.
