Discovering Antiques: A Guide to the World of Antiques and Collectables by Eric Knowles is an accessible and extensively illustrated introduction to the fascinating world of antiques, collecting and decorative arts. Written by one of Britain’s best-known antiques specialists, the book is designed both for newcomers beginning to explore antiques and for established collectors wanting a convenient general reference work.
Across 224 pages, Knowles introduces readers to a broad spectrum of collectable objects and explains the characteristics that help distinguish period pieces, quality craftsmanship and desirable examples. Subjects include furniture, clocks, ceramics, glass, silver, jewellery, textiles, toys, collectables and other decorative objects. Numerous colour photographs provide practical visual references, making Discovering Antiques particularly useful for identifying styles, periods and types of antique.
Discovering Antiques also includes price information relating to the period of publication. While these values should not be regarded as current market valuations, they provide an interesting historical indication of the antiques market at the end of the twentieth century and can be useful when studying how collecting trends and values have changed.
This 1999 Aurum Press edition was revised from the work first published by De Agostini Editions in 1996. Eric Knowles is particularly associated with nineteenth- and twentieth-century decorative arts and became widely known through his appearances as an antiques expert on British television.
